[When you are the daughter of a businessman you either have a wonderful and benevolent Father or you have Haru's Father. Cold, uncaring, and willing to sacrifice anything he can to make a deal.

Haru is only seventeen, much too young (in her opinion) to even think about the words "engagement" or "marriage". But that doesn't stop her Father from giving her away without her consent. She begged him not to make her become the end of a business arrangement, she pleaded with him for days. But to her Father? A deal is a deal, and it was already set in stone by the time she may have had any objections.

Today is the day...the day that she must meet her new "fiance", the actual worst day of her life. She will try to look presentable and be on her best behaviour. She can't imagine the other person in this deal is having a much better time than her.]

[ when Goro's father told him one day, without warning or ceremony, that there had been a fiancée chosen for him, Goro hadn't said a word. it hadn't been a good enough response, he'd learned, covering the bruise on his temple with concealer the next morning. but he hadn't protested. he'd accepted it without question because there was no point in resisting something so utterly banal when Masayoshi Shido could come up with a hundred worse things to do with his son's life.

they're to meet for the first time at a restaurant, Okumura decides, like adults; they'll take a car there together, Shido decides, like a couple. because they are now, aren't they? Goro knows it might be years before he gets the opportunity to destroy his father. in that time, they could be married, and he'll be stuck with this girl for the rest of his life. he hasn't bothered learning anything about Haru Okumura, because it doesn't matter. there's no choice involved in this, nothing he can do to change it one way or the other, no point in even trying to "make the best of a bad situation."

even so, when the limousine pulls up at the Okumura house, Goro does distantly hope she isn't too much like their parents — power-hungry, cruel, greedy.

the driver opens the door. Goro gets out with all his heavy reluctance sitting in the back of his throat like he's tried to swallow it and it's gotten stuck, and he goes to meet her at the front door of her home. stands there in his black suit and tie. he bows to her, as an afterthought. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Okumura-san.

[ he doesn't smile. he's barely even looking at her. ]

[After a tearful morning, it was a surprise to even Haru that she was able to clean up as well a she did. She wears a simple formal dress and carries a small bag with it. Every curl on her head seems to have been set and placed perfectly. Her face was given the listest wash of makeup to help liven her up. All in all? Haru Okumura was meant to be someone's trophy.

At least that is how she is certain her Father views it.]

[She gives him a bow in return, almost practiced. She doesn't seem to be looking at him either, no interest in her expression. She wouldn't blame him if he ended up hating her.

If only they didn't have to do this. If only Haru knew what to do after she stepped outside her home. The air between them is tense.]
